Blue Shield to Manage California’s COVID-19 Vaccination Efforts

Feb 8, 2021, 2 Minute Read

To expand and accelerate COVID-19 vaccinations statewide, Blue Shield of California has been selected to efficiently and equitably manage the vaccine administration and distribution following the state’s guidance to prioritize safety, equity, and speed.

The new statewide vaccine distribution network, overseen by Blue Shield, will comprise a wide variety of locations at which vaccinations will be administered, including pharmacies, community health centers, and temporary pop-up locations. State officials said the system will focus on ensuring the equitable distribution of vaccine doses and allow for fast adjustments as needed, as well as track all vaccines from order to injection.

Blue Shield is working as quickly as possible to dramatically expand the rate of vaccinations so that all Californians can be protected – with a key focus on disparately affected communities. Despite the complexity of the vaccination roll-out plan, the goal is to vaccinate most Californians by summer 2021.

California recently launched with a questionnaire to help determine an individual’s vaccine eligibility in their area. This tool will eventually extend to all counties and is intended to also include appointment scheduling, notifications, and vaccination tracking data for California.

Additionally, Kaiser Permanente, a health maintenance organization that provides services for more than 9 million Californians, will run a separate vaccination program for its members and provide additional assistance to the state.

More details about Blue Shield’s role in California’s vaccination efforts will be released soon. The announcement is available here, and it was recently covered by the LA Times.
