The California Minimum Essential Coverage Individual Mandate takes effect on January 1, 2020. As you may recall, the federal individual mandate effectively ended beginning in 2018. However, Governor Newsom committed to reinstating the mandate in California, and the new mandate was included in SB 78, which passed earlier this year.
The new California mandate largely mirrors the provisions of the old federal mandate. It requires California residents to maintain minimum essential coverage for themselves and their dependents, or pay a state tax penalty.
