New Blue Shield Plans

Starting July 1, Covered California for Small Business (CCSB) is offering new Blue Shield plans, providing more options for enrollees. These plans include the Access+ HMO Network with Platinum, Gold, and Silver metal tier options, as well as the Bronze Trio HMO 7000/70. The two most popular Blue Shield High Deductible Health Plans (HDHP), Silver Full PPO Savings 2300/25% and Bronze Full PPO Savings 7000 plans, are also now available.

All of these plans offer benefits such as Wellvolution, Teladoc Mental Health, Nurse Help 24/7, LifeReferrals 24/7, and the Blue Card program for when members are outside of California.

A reliable and extensive dentist network is essential for quality dental care and cost-effective access to in-network services. Delta Dental offers a distinct advantage in this regard, boasting the largest proprietary dentist network in the nation. As of September 2021, Delta Dental’s combined Dental Dental PPO™ and Delta Dental Premier® networks feature over 155,000 unique dentists.

Unlike many competitors, Delta Dental directly contracts with its dentists and does not rely on leased networks from other carriers. Delta advocates that direct contracting mitigates these disadvantages of leased networks:

Access Fees: Carriers that lease networks often pass on access fees to clients, affecting the savings they are entitled to. Delta Dental doesn’t charge these fees.
Network Size: Carriers relying on leased networks might claim to have a “large” network, but keeping track of active dentists can be challenging. Delta Dental maintains direct contact with its dentists, ensuring accurate and updated directories.
Network Stability: Network leases can end unexpectedly, which can result in dentists being dropped from a client’s network without warning. This isn’t a concern with Delta Dental’s proprietary networks.
Costs and Billing: Leased networks can lead to inconsistent costs and incorrect billing due to multiple fee schedules. In contrast, Delta Dental offers predictable, consistent fees and uniform billing.
Quality Concerns: Carriers leasing networks might not meet acceptable standards for treatment plans, safety measures, office cleanliness, or proper credentialing since they don’t have direct relationships with dentists.
